Cultivate
Accessories for a communal garden inspired by Vestre’s urban furniture.
Brand Analysis
Scandinavian urban furniture company Vestre creates products that enable community building. In order to create products that honored this value, I first analyzed the brand’s design language.
Community Gardens
Shared gardens serve as an important space for city dwellers to reconnect with nature and their community.
The Cultivate series aims to enhance the usability and welcoming atmosphere within these spaces.
Garden Tool Caddy
Within a community garden, portability and organization of gardening tools are key to using the space efficiently.
This caddy hooks onto the side of a raised planter box, enhancing the ease of using the garden space.
Gardening tool storage exploration sketches
Prototyping
First Iteration
Lid opening upward blocks the user’s view of the tools inside
Second Iteration
Easier access to storage area, but individual metal pieces difficult to manufacture.
Efficient Material Usage
The frame of the garden tool holder is punched from a single sheet of steel.
The flat pattern is designed to use material as efficiently as possible and reduce waste.
Solar Path Light
Installing lighting in a community garden enhances the space after dark, creating a more social and inviting space.
The Cultivate solar powered light is easily integrated into the space thanks to its hook, allowing it to be hung on the side of a planter bed. Mounting it on the raised bed also increases how wide the light is cast.
